Summary
Accepting as presupposition that the unity of the disciples is the principal theme of the “priestly prayer” of Jesus (in Jn 17), the Author proposes an interpretation of this important prayer as identifying and explaining the basic dimensions of ecumenism. In particular he focuses on the following dimensions: spiritual, concrete historical (concerning visible unity), trinitarian, eschatological, missionary and martyrological. At the same time he argues that this prayer makes it clear that the ecumenism of Christians will be fruitful only if the latter arrive at a greater awareness that it cannot be limited to words alone, but should also bring about a concrete communion of life which points to a new, ecclesial style of life. Given past and present difficulties, the Year of Faith appears to invite the Church to its self-evangelization, so that it is able to witness authentically to the Gospel of unity and to place itself at the service of the unity of humankind in a more credible manner.
